Hidden places in Switzerland you’ll want to keep secret

Switzerland is known for its famous destinations — but the real magic often lies in the quieter corners.
If you’re looking for hidden places in Switzerland, or even true hidden gems away from the crowds, these spots offer a slower and more peaceful way to experience the mountains.

Over time, I’ve found myself drawn to places that feel untouched — quiet lakes, soft landscapes, and moments where everything slows down.
These are some of my favorite secret places in Switzerland, perfect for calm and intentional days outdoors.

Arnisee — a hidden lake in Uri, Switzerland

Best time to visit: Spring or summer
How to get there: Cable car from Intschi (round trip costs 16 CHF) , followed by easy walking paths
Why it’s special: One of the most peaceful hidden lakes in Switzerland

We visited Arnisee in Canton Uri, Switzerland for the first time when our baby was just 4 months old—a mid-spring day in April that felt like pure magic. The valley around the lake was sprinkled with what looked like thousands of crocus flowers, with the last traces of winter still lingering on the surrounding peaks.

Because it stole our hearts so quickly, we came back again in August—and Arnisee was just as beautiful in summer, only in a completely different way. This time, the area felt lively and local: families (mostly Swiss locals) grilling, children playing by the water, and people simply enjoying a slow day outside.

Where to eat: Gasthaus Arnisee (easy walk + cosy atmosphere)

After a walk around the lake, we loved stopping at Gasthaus Arnisee in Vorder Arni—an easy ~15-minute walk from the lake. The food was delicious, and on our visit we even caught live traditional music, which made the whole experience feel extra special.

One important tip: Gasthaus Arnisee is seasonal. According to the official Arnisee site, it’s closed for winter and is expected to reopen around mid-May 2026, so it’s worth checking current opening status before you go.

Bannalpsee — a peaceful mountain lake in Nidwalden, Switzerland

Best time to visit: Summer to early autumn
How to get there: Cable car from Fell (round trip 23 CHF), then easy hiking trails
Why it’s special: Quiet atmosphere and fewer crowds than other Swiss lakes

We visited Bannalpsee in May with our 5 months old baby, when spring had just reached the alpine valleys. The mountains around the lake still held patches of snow while the meadows were slowly turning green, creating a beautiful contrast typical for the Swiss Alps in late spring.

Bannalpsee feels peaceful and authentic, far away from the busy tourist spots. During our visit we saw hikers and a few local families enjoying the calm atmosphere and the stunning mountain views around the lake.

On this hike we preferred to do a little picknick like many other families but it is also possible to eat at Berggasthaus Bannalpsee, a cosy alpine restaurant right by the lake. It’s the perfect place to sit outside, enjoy a warm meal, and take in the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

If you visit in spring, it’s always a good idea to check the opening hours of the restaurant, as many mountain huts reopen for the season around May depending on weather conditions.

Trübsee — an easy alpine escape in Obwalden, Switzerland

Trübsee in June

Best time to visit: Summer and early autumn
How to get there: Cable car from Engelberg (round trip 38 CHF)
Why it’s special: Easy access, family-friendly, and beautiful alpine views

Trübsee, above Engelberg, is one of those places that feels incredibly accessible, yet still surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.

While it’s more known than the others, it can feel surprisingly calm, especially in the early morning or outside peak times. The lake is easy to reach by cable car and offers wide, well-maintained paths — making it one of the most stroller-friendly mountain lakes in Switzerland.

It’s a perfect option if you’re looking for a relaxed day in the mountains without too much planning. There are plenty of options where to eat and in summer you can also take a dip in the lake.

Bonus tip: grab a coffee at Roastery Engelberg.

You will not regret it.

Lac de Moiry — a turquoise glacier lake in Valais, Switzerland

Best time to visit: Summer and autumn
How to get there: Easily accessible by car
Why it’s special: One of the most striking glacier lakes in Switzerland

Lac de Moiry in October

Lac de Moiry might not be a complete secret, but it still feels like one.

The intense turquoise color of the water, combined with glacier views and high alpine peaks, makes it one of the most breathtaking places in Switzerland. Visit early in the day or during quieter seasons to experience it without the crowds.

It’s better suited for a baby carrier, as paths can be uneven, but still absolutely worth visiting.

We visited this beautiful place in early November. The colours were truly stunning.

After exploring the lake, you can stop for lunch at Restaurant du Lac de Moiry, located right next to the dam. The terrace offers beautiful views over the turquoise water and surrounding glaciers. The restaurant usually opens from mid-June, so if you visit earlier in the season, it’s best to bring your own food

Final Thoughts

Each of these lakes holds a special memory for us. From visiting Arnisee when our baby was just four months old to discovering peaceful alpine corners like Bannalpsee and Lac de Moiry, these places remind us how beautiful and diverse Switzerland really is.

If you’re exploring the Swiss Alps, I highly recommend adding a few of these lakes to your itinerary.
